Chapter Fifteen

“What shall I wear?” Carrie asked, staring at the sparse selection of clothes in her wardrobe.

“What are you doing today?” Eve replied, her voice floating through the phone, which was propped up on a pile of pillows in the middle of the bed. She was squinting over FaceTime to see Carrie’s petite figure against the vast wardrobe.

“I don’t know,” replied Carrie, pulling out three different jumpers, inspecting them and then putting them all back.

“Carrie, just relax. If he were taking you anywhere you needed to be smartly dressed, he would have told you. Just go for some jeans, a nice t-shirt, and some comfortable shoes in case he’s planning to make you walk far.”

“Okay, jeans and a nice t-shirt,” repeated Carrie. She pulled out a pair of blue fitted jeans and a soft grey t-shirt with long sleeves and a square neck.

“That looks perfect,” Eve called. There was a huge clatter in the background and she turned to look at it.

“Do you need to go?” asked Carrie, placing the clothes on the bed and picking her phone up so she could see Eve.

“I’m sorry, Carrie. Lachlan is interviewing hotel managers today, which means I’m having to pick up his work, too.”

“That’s fine. How’re interviews going?”

“Terribly. The only people applying are locals and they just don’t have the necessary experience. We had one applicant whose previous experience was in farming.” Another clatter in the background had Eve running to the other side of the kitchen.

“I’ll let you go. Speak soon.”

“Text me to let me know how your date goes! Love you.” Eve put the phone down before Carrie could reply. She wanted to protest that it wasn’t a date, but even she wasn’t sure she could say it very convincingly. Could it be considered a date if they were just having a fling?

Lucas texted Carrie to say he was just leaving and would be at the hotel in half an hour. Carrie felt as though she had an entire aviary of birds flying around in her stomach. She pulled on her clothes and added a pair of small silver hoops to her ears and slipped on a matching ring Eve had gifted her at Christmas. Since it was her day off, she was enjoying being able to have her hair down and so she smoothed her fingers through her curls in an attempt to tame them. It did very little to help.

After applying some basic make-up, Carrie pulled on some trainers and grabbed her phone and cardholder, slipping them into her pocket. Lucas should be there any moment, so she went down to reception to wait for him.

The reception area was quiet since it was past check-out time. Their long-weekend guests had all departed and there was a slight lull before the midweek guests checked in. Carrie settled herself on one of the sofas and pulled her phone out of her pocket to check her emails. Lachlan had forwarded her the CVs for some students so she could think about having some help in the kitchen when she returned.
